Overview

Overview

The Biomedical Informatics (BMI) Master's Program offers a master's degree in biomedical informatics from MIT for individuals who already hold an advanced degree in medicine or a medically related field. The goal of the program is to prepare graduates to become leaders in the development and application of information technology in health and biomedical science.

Biomedical informatics involves modeling and understanding the cognitive, information processing and communication tasks of biomedical science, medical practice, education and research, as well as the application of information science and technology to support these tasks. The field is intrinsically interdisciplinary, drawing on traditional biomedical disciplines, the science and technology of computing, biostatistics, epidemiology, decision sciences, and health care policy and management. Areas of focus include bioinformatics, and informatics related to clinical practice, health services research, biomedical imaging and public health.

Graduates pursue several alternative career paths. Some use their knowledge to become involved in the application of informatics in health care information systems, bioinformatics, public health, or other biomedical computing activities. Career paths include primary academic research in BMI, information systems and development and management in health care delivery organizations and in the public health sector, and research and management in BMI commercial entities.

The Biomedical Informatics Training Program

HST is a key participant in a broader predoctoral and postdoctoral training program in Biomedical Informatics in cooperation with ten informatics research and development groups at Boston-area universities and affiliated hospitals.
